Chlorine gas (Cl2) is most often used for disinfection and sanitization in a variety of industries such as chemical processing and wastewater treatment due to its effectiveness and ease of use. However, it is considered a volatile organic compound (VOC) and is highly toxic and sometimes explosive if combined with other substances. Exposure to chlorine gas can result in irritation of the eyes, mucous membrane, skin and respiratory system and can even result in death at higher levels. Considering the significant risks of chlorine gas, reliable detection equipment is vital in the case of an accidental release.
